Boys basketball team prepares for scrimmage vs. Natomas High

As the winter season approaches Westlake Charter Boys Varsity Basketball have a game against Natomas High School on November 14th. This will be the first game of the season. The Expedition will be interviewing players and the coaches on how certain drills and workouts help them prepare for the game.

To begin, the players participate in a drill that is meant to improve player ball-handling and freezing the defender. The players take only three dribbles with their right hand to a cone on the half court line. Next, they get low and pound the ball as hard as they can until the coach blows his whistle. After the whistle blows the players do a double crossover for it to land in their right hand and go by the right side of the cone while the other person in line waits for the turn to go.

The next drill makes players between the legs dribble over the cone, then take one dribble and hop-step into the paint, the paint is the box that is right under the hoop. After, they jab-step with either their right or left leg (depending on what side they are on), do a spin move then take a mid-range jump shot. If the player was to miss their shot then they would get their rebound and take a layup and finish around the basket. According to Matthew Quilatan, “This drill helps us work on our moves in the post, our change of direction, and how to fake out a defender.”

The Expedition would like to thank Coach Sterling and Matthew Quilatan for their time. Make sure to come check out the basketball game against Natomas High on November 14th and support your teams. To find more stories like this make sure to check out The Expedition.
